AWARENESS & YOUTH SAFETY SEMINAR
The
Delaware Optimist Club held another Stranger Awareness Seminar
on May 12, 2007 with our good friends at Summit Martial Arts,
The Delaware City Police Department and The Delaware County
Sheriff’s Office. The partnership of these fine organizations
made the seminar a great success! Photos
from the May 12th, 2007 seminar are online.
The purpose of the Stranger Awareness
and Safety Seminar is to promote youth safety. The seminar
was open to all Delaware
County children age 4 and up.
The program included:
- Hands-on self defense
- Role play
- Spotting dangerous actions
- Politeness vs. safety
- Awareness tips
- Internet safety
- Child ID
- Child protection
Previous Stranger Awareness
and Safety Seminars
The first Stranger Awareness
and Safety Seminar was held on Saturday, April 15, 2006 and
the second on June 10th, 2006. See
some photos from the June workshop.
Summit Martial Arts provided
demonstrations on common lures, self-defense, at-home safety
as well as safety in public places. Officer Rita Mendel with
the assistance of Citizens Patrol provided child ID and fingerprinting
and information on at-home safety. Deputy Doug Simila of the
Delaware County Sheriff’s office provided helpful information
on staying safe in public areas and the safest method for
getting help when becoming lost or separated from your group
in public.
“In many ways it takes an entire
community to make sure our children grow up in a safe environment,”
Club President Hank Nichols said. “With this program, we hope
to do our part in ensuring that local children grow up safely.”
Optimist International is one
